ICDS - Anganwadi
ICDS (Integrated Child Development Services) is a major social welfare scheme implemented by the Government of India aimed at comprehensive health and nutritional development of children, pregnant women and lactating mothers. Launched in 1975, this scheme is implemented under the Department of Women and Child Development.
The main objectives of the ICDS scheme are to improve the nutrition and health of children between the ages of 0 and 6, ensure health care of pregnant and lactating mothers, reduce infant mortality and malnutrition, provide pre-school education, and provide health and nutrition awareness to parents.
Main services provided through ICDS
1. Supplementary Nutrition - Provides additional nutrition to children and pregnant women.
2. Pre-school Education - Provides basic learning activities to children between the ages of 3 and 6 in Anganwadis.
3. Immunization - Vaccination of children and mothers against various diseases.
4. Health check-up - Monitors the growth and health status of children.
5. Referral services - Refers those with serious health problems to hospitals.
6. Nutrition and health awareness - Provides training to mothers on hygiene, nutrition and child care.
Anganwadis are the main operational centers of the ICDS scheme. Anganwadis are village-level child development centers that operate as part of the ICDS (Integrated Child Development Services) scheme in India. The main objective of Anganwadis is to improve the health, nutritional status and education of children, pregnant women and lactating mothers.
